Hand Hewn
Mantels and Shelves

Hand Hewn beam mantels provide a rustic look that can’t be replicated, and a solid wood structure that is made to last. These wood mantel shelves were created by hand using a broad axe and retain the charm of the artisans who created them. Salvaged from reclaimed barn beams, a rustic fireplace mantel has qualities like nail holes, mortise pockets, notches, and peg holes. Compared to a stone fireplace, these features add depth and history to this focal point in your living room.

Wire brushing is a great way to add a refining touch to any of our wood mantels and shelves. This added step will raise the grain, enhancing the refined rustic look of the natural wood. Wire brushing a fireplace mantel that is going to be pre finished is a great way to refine the look and create a more consistent appearance.

End Options

To further enhance the looks of your solid wood mantel shelf, consider adding our antique distressed ends. We have developed a unique process that will blend the color of the newly cut lumber with that of the original surface. This is a step we recommend on pre finished mantels to ensure a consistent finish on all sides.

Only for square beam mantels!

Some of our wood mantel shelves are created from antique timbers from barns and rural structures. The buildings were constructed using a technique called Mortise and Tenon Joinery to create the structural frame of the building. The mortise pockets are unique to each rustic mantel beam and an eclectic part of their appearance. If you would like your fireplace mantel to be mortise free on at least one face, please let us know at the time you order.

Matching Corbels

Giving the appearance of a structural support beam coming out from the wall below the mantelpiece or shelving, this is the perfect way to give your rustic mantel shelf the feeling that it has been there forever. Wood mantels can also be installed as floating shelves if you prefer.

*Corbels will match the mantel/shelving they are ordered with (i.e. rough sawn or hand hewn, texture options, finish options and distressed ends will all match the mantel ordered)

Rough Sawn
Mantels and Shelves

Rough sawn mantels are ingrained with the circular saw marks created when the reclaimed barn wood was originally milled more than a century ago, but have a smoother surface. This wood fireplace mantel shelf brings a refined rustic charm as a focal point in your living room. Reclaimed barn wood has typical wear and tear such as nail holes, mortise pockets/notches, natural checking and peg holes. These characteristics mean each wood beam is a one-of-a-kind home decor addition with a unique rustic look and a story to tell.

Rustic Box Beams
Mantels Only

Faux wood fireplace mantels have a realistic wood texture and are the perfect alternative to a solid wood fireplace mantel shelf. You can enjoy the look of a barn wood mantel without all the weight of solid wood. Sawn from real wood cabinet lumber or reclaimed barn beams, the faux wood beam mantel is lighter than it’s solid wood counterparts. Weighing only a fraction of what a solid mantel weighs, you can easily mount a faux wood mantel in many situations where it would either be costly or impossible to mount a solid wood fireplace mantel. No one will know the difference and you can still have a rustic fireplace mantel as a focal point in your living room to be proud of!

Installation Questions?

Due to the nature of these wood mantels and their installation process, we do not recommend diy. We suggest having new mantels or shelves installed by a professional contractor with experience in woodwork. There are several methods for installation of the fireplace mantel shelf. Most installation methods include lag bolts designed to be used with masonry for stone fireplace installations.
