White woods and a mainstay of Scandinavian design style, where they are used extensively. In contrast to dark or natural colored wood floors, white washed wood floors brighten the room and give the appearance of a larger room than actually exists.

When considering a site finished floor or using a pre finished product there are several factors that should be considered. First and foremost is uniformity, flooring pre finished in a controlled environment will be more consistent and will not require time to cure before use. Another important factor is the type of finish that is used, and how it is applied. When choosing a floor always make sure the top coats are durable, repairable and do not contain excessive chemicals that can be harmful.

While you can find information online that suggests using paint to whitewash wood flooring, this is not recommended or a good idea. The best products are ones designed to work in conjunction with the wood and are designed with white washing in mind. Another important factor is penetration, paint will sit on top of the wood and will not penetrate. A proper stain will soak in and allow the top coat finish to adhere to the wood creating a strong finish that will last for years to come.
