Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine Description: One of our most popular woods, Heart Pine is sought after for its rich gold, orange-red and pumpkin tones derived from the heart of the southern yellow pine species.  Sapwood is a creamier, pinkish-tan and growth rings are dark, dense and very conspicuous.  Derived from the ‘Heart’ of the southern yellow pine trunk, it is the heaviest and hardest softwood in the world and is excellent for any application.  It is very resinous and has a straight grain texture that can be wavy on rare occasions.  Heart pine has very tight growth rings (up to 30 per inch).  In fact, upon reaching maturity, southern pines would grow only one inch in diameter every thirty years.  This slow growth rate, coupled with the warmer climate of the southeastern United States, allowed for the trees to grow strong, straight and massive, until logging decimated the populations.  The Southern Heart Pine forests of the Southeast were once massive, stretching from southern Virginia along the eastern seaboard to the tip of Florida and pushing west all the way to Texas.  It was a widely utilized timber throughout our history for traditional flooring, construction, dock pilings and was the timber of choice during the colonial period for British ship masts.  Today, heart pine is reclaimed predominantly from old industrial buildings and warehouses, where it was a favorite for it’s massive dimensions and strength.  The majority of the Southeast is planted with southern yellow pine, but it will be a few more centuries of uninterrupted growth before this beautiful lumber will be able to match the original old growth that is long gone.
